My Favorite Autistic TV Characters

Hey, how are you? I’m back. Today was long. I was at my friend’s house, and then I had to shower. Ugh, executive dysfunction!

I hope you guys enjoy reading about my life and everyday exploits over the coming days and months, maybe even years. Oh, damn, you guys might be here a while. 🙂 🙂

Has anyone seen Netflix’s reboot of She-Ra? It’s great, right? My favorite character is Entrapta. You can’t tell me she’s not autistic! You just can’t.

She’s totally written as autistic. It’s so plain to see, a blind person would see it. Oh wait, I just did. Ha ha. I’m talking about Entrapta because I wanna tell you guys about some of my absolute favorite autistic characters on TV.

The first is Dr. Shaun Murphy, from ABC’s The Good Doctor. He’s absolutely amazing. Sure, they completely fuck up and focus mainly on his savant abilities during the first season, but they vastly improve by the second season. I’m currently waiting with bated breath for the third season. It’s going to be absolutely fantastic!

The reason I love Shaun so much is because he’s very honest. He reminds me a lot of another autistic I know. He’s intelligent, and he’s shown to be competent, living on his own and then with a roommate in an apartment in California. He makes friends, and his issues are not infantilized. The best part? He’s shown to learn and grow over the course of the show. He’s not completely stagnant. He’s developmentally delayed, which is a core part of ASD, but he’s not incompetent. Quite the contrary, actually. He’s intelligent, though he has to learn social intelligence, which is totally fine.

The second character is Sam Gartner from Netflix’s Atypical. Sure, he’s a little stereotypical, but he’s the character that helped me discover I might be different. I related so hard to his rigidity of routine, his restricted diet, his obsessing over something so intensely. He will always, I think, hold a special place in my heart.  He’s just a kid trying to make it in life, and at the end of the day, isn’t that what we all are?

Finally, there’s Entrapta, as mentioned above. She is so me!!! I had a huge special interest in her when I watched the first season back in 2018. She is so similar to me in both the special interest department and the empathy department.

We both have a special interest in tech. For me, I live and breathe tech. I know more about Apple than I probably should. There’s just something so magical about computers and the like that just gets my heart pumping and my research fingers itching to get to my MacBook.

Entrapta has trouble with empathy, something I, myself, experience. She has trouble empathizing with her fellow princess. I think the writers wheydt a little over-the-top when writing her issues with empathy, but it’s similar to mine. I empathize strongly with inanimate objects, such as machines, just like Entrapta. I have some trouble relating to my friends’ problems, unless they’re very close to me, but even then, it’s hard.

I don’t like that they made Entrapta a villain by using her naivety and her lack of awareness and obsession with tech, but she’s still a great character. I love how she’s written. Whether or not she was meant to be interpreted as autistic, I see her that way, and I’m sure lots of other people do, as well.

If you’ve reached the end of this post, awesome! I’m not that boring. At least, I hope I’m not. *crowd snores*

God damn it, I guess I am! Just kidding, I promise. I hope I’ve done a good job explaining some of my favorite characters. I hope you enjoyed reading this. I’m going to try to keep up with this blog every day, but it might be once a week. We’ll see. Anyway, thanks for stopping by! See you later!

Introduction

Hi. If you’ve managed to run across this blog by accident or on purpose, congratulations! You are now entering the mind of a loud, creative, tech-obsessed autistic who also just happens to be completely blind. I would say blind as a bat, but I recently found out that bats aren’t actually blind. Go figure. Why do people say they are, then? That’s just illogical.

A little about me: my name is Christina, but I prefer the name Becca. In fact, I would like to be referred to as Becca from here on out on this blog.  I’m totally blind. I’m a self-diagnosed autistic, currently in pursuit of a formal diagnosis. My main special interests are technology and words, although I do have fleeting special interests, usually revolving around a fandom.

I’m just like everyone my age. I love TV shows, though I’m very particular. I have hobbies and friends (only 3), and I have depression and anxiety. Yup, completely normal. 🙂 🙂

My life’s complicated. I was emotionally abused by my mom for several years, so I have what’s called developmental trauma. I’m also a lesbian with very specific criteria,  which makes dating extremely hard. Because I’m extremely picky due to my oral sensitivities, I’m really slim. I’ve got a pretty restricted diet.

The three friends I’ve got are awesome. You’ll learn more about them as we go along. This blog is going to be a digital record of my life. I’m going to talk about all the things—or at least most of them—that matter to me: ASD, blindness, blautism (which is a term you’ll be seeing a lot here. It means blindness and autism combined), and LGBTQ issues. I really hope you enjoy this blog. Okay, here we go!
